A Tech Word List
Some words appear again and again across the hub's articles. Rather than define them in every guide, this list keeps short, plain explanations in one place, with a link to the article where each term matters most.

Settings-menu words
Terms you will spot inside phone settings
Labels that sound technical but describe simple switches.
| Setting | What it controls | When to look at it |
|---|---|---|
| Background refresh | Lets apps fetch new content while you are not using them | When battery or data drains faster than expected |
| Safe mode | Starts an Android phone with only its built-in apps | When several apps misbehave at once |
| Airplane mode | Switches off every radio until you turn some back on | Abroad, to stop roaming while keeping Wi-Fi |
| Extra sign-in step | Asks for a second proof besides the password | Setting up staff accounts for a small business |
| Firmware | Software built into a gadget such as a mower or light controller | When a smart device needs an update to stay stable |
Names vary between manufacturers; searching the settings screen for one key word usually finds the switch.
